Vincenzo Scamozzi,  architect in Venice
Vincenzo Scamozzi (1548-1616), a North-Italian architect, designed several striking palaces, estates and churches in and around Vicenza, Padua and Venice. He also produced a lengthy study of Antiquity architecture and opportunities for contemporary applications. This book (L’Idea della Architettura Universale) was originally published in 1615 and was considered to be the best manual for understanding architecture. Classicist architecture from the Dutch Golden Age is based on the general principles of Scamozzi’s theories.

Hypnerotomachia Poliphili
Wolbert Vroom also figured in the Dutch translation of the Hypnerotomachia Poliphili. This book, published by the renowned printer Aldus Manutius in 1499, is one of the most fascinating works from the early days of the printing press. The complex title Hypnerotomachia Poliphili (meaning: Poliphilus’s struggle for love in his sleep) exemplifies the literary style, which is a contrived, pedantic Italian, laced with Latin. Poliphilus, the hero, wanders into a forest and falls asleep there. In his dream he embarks on an adventurous journey (through places such as a garden of Paradise and a subterranean crypt) that ultimately takes him to his love Polia.
This reunion is very brief, as Poliphilus awakens to discover that Polia has disappeared. The edition features fine typography and lovely illustrations.

Bouwen in Amsterdam
Building in Amsterdam is the most comprehensive publication about dwellings in Amsterdam. As opposed to the usual architectural history, which mainly focuses on large public buildings such as churches, town halls and palaces, Zantkuijl discusses the residences of citizens. This description of the architecture of residences in the Netherlands, centered on Amsterdam, starts with the earliest examples of wooden and stone houses and ends in the twentieth century. 'Building in Amsterdam' was published in sixty issues between 1973 and 1992. This collection with an integrated register (compiled by Wolbert Vroom), which was published in 1993, 1994 and 1997 is available again since 2007.
